What is the HSK Exam?
HSK stands for Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì (汉语水平考试) and is an international standard exam designed to assess the Mandarin proficiency of non-native speakers. It is administered by Hanban, a department under China’s Ministry of Education.

How Many Levels Are There?
The traditional HSK structure has six levels. Each level tests progressively higher vocabulary, grammar, and communication skills in Mandarin:
- HSK 1–2: Basic vocabulary, listening and reading
- HSK 3–6: Listening, reading, and writing abilities
HSK 6 represents a near-native level of fluency.
What Is the Format of the HSK Exam?
- HSK 1 & 2: Listening + Reading (Multiple Choice)
- HSK 3 to 6: Listening, Reading, and Writing
From HSK 3 onwards, students are expected to express themselves clearly in writing and comprehend conversations of increasing complexity.
