There is one short story made of words that used only one sound, shi (sounds like ‘sure’). It is “The Story of Mr. Shi Eating Lions” which was written by Zhao Yuanren, a Chinese linguist. This short story is composed of 91 words and all of the words are of the same sound “Shi”, but with different tones and different characters. A language student may think, “It’s impossible to learn all these Chinese words!” But what if you were told that there are quite a few Chinese words used in English that you already know? 1. Tofu: Tofu is soy bean curd. It comes directly from its Chinese name, 豆腐 (dòu fǔ). 2. Lychee Lychee is a tropical fruit with characteristically red shells and sweet, white flesh.
